About The Invincibles
The 1948 Australian Cricket Team led by Don Bradman accomplished what no side before or since could achieve and that was to complete a tour of England undefeated. Playing in some 34 games, including 5 Tests, this remarkable side proved again and again that they could win the ‘unwinable’ games. The team set sail for England as a sporting team, they returned as legends… they came back as ‘The Invincibles’.
The Invincibles could be on the precipice of defeat but such was their batting, bowling and fielding mastery that at no time in any game would the darkness of defeat be allowed to block out their courageous commitment to win. They wanted to win not just for themselves, but for all Australians. They had no team sponsors, no logos, no million dollar contracts, they just loved playing cricket and knew how to win better than any other side before or since.
The greatness of The Invincibles position in the history of cricket is further enhanced when you consider that in the era when they played, cricket pitches remained uncovered during the games duration. Overnight rain and showers during the day often caused the most docile of pitches to become treacherous.
It is hard to imagine many modem sides being able to master all wickets the way this magnificently talented 1948 side did as a regular part of their playing skills. They made the difficult tasks look easy, such was their talent.
Even today such is their community of spirit that each of the surviving players wanted to contribute to this project in so many ways. This tribute shows rare photographs of all players using their trademark shot or bowling action. Each photograph has been selected by the legendary Neil Harvey.
Comparisons, between teams of different eras is difficult and achieves little, but it is fact that over 50 years of cricket have been played and no team has come close to their achievements.
In cricket’s great history the deeds of the 1948 Invincibles are secure at the very summit of the game’s traditions.
This Rare Piece Of Cricket Memorabilia Salutes Them.
